Print Book Design and Layout
Most people may not know the ins and outs of professional typesetting, but they do notice when a book is not laid out well. I take your manuscript master document (usually in Word, but I can accept a variety of document formats), and lay it out in print book format, with front matter (title page, copyright page, dedication, acknowledgments, index), main text, and back matter (about the author, glossary), maps and illustrations, tables, graphics—all with careful attention to the details. You receive a press-ready PDF master file.
My work is $50/hour. How how many hours it takes depends largely upon the complexity of the material. To give you a rough sense, typesetting a 70,000-word fiction novel manuscript from a clean Word document might run about 8 hours.
Ebook Design and Formatting
Ebooks can be tricky, especially in getting them to look good in a variety of e-readers. My approach centers on clean mark-up and effective, efficient stylings. You receive an ePub master and, optionally, a Kindle version.
The time required depends upon how “clean” the styles are in the manuscript, so I bill the work at an hourly rate of $50/hour.
I design compelling covers for all formats—hardcover dustjackets, paperback covers, and ebook covers. If you already have artwork you want to use, I can incorporate it into press-ready and upload-ready cover files for your book. $50/hour.
I do two basic types of editing for science fiction, fantasy, action thriller, and literary novels:
Copyediting (aka line editing)—a range of editing tasks, from cleaning up grammar and typos, checking for consistency, avoiding repetitive words, that kind of thing, to helping with stylistic consistency. I do this for fiction at between $0.02 and $0.04 per word. Once I see the manuscript, I can give you a quote for the total. I will do a sample edit of up to 1,000 words so you can see how I would approach your text.
Developmental editing—a zoomed-out, big-picture view of your project, looking at character development, story structure, main tension, world building, theme development, and so on. This work can be quick or very involved, depending upon the state of the manuscript and what kind of feedback you’re looking for, so I do this at a rate of $50/hour.
If you're independent and need some help navigating the world of independent publishing, I can help—whether it’s getting your book up on Kindle with the right metadata, or securing ISBNs, or navigating CreateSpace, or getting your book moving through Lightning Source or Ingram. I can help with Kindle x-ray, iBooks publishing, Nook, Google Books and Google Play (which are different things), and Smashwords—pointing out some tips and things to watch for so you can take over your own publishing tasks from solid footing.
This consulting can overlap with the services above. Just let me know. There is no minimum as an add-on to other work, a two-hour minimum just for just the consulting. We can communicate by video conference/Facetime and/or by email. Whatever works best for you. $50/hour.
